Sleep Related Problems

Early Intervention

Sleep is important for all of us.  However, the quality and quantity of sleep is diminishing due to environmental stressors and biological changes to and within our bodies.  These stressors will eventually cause serious health effects like high blood pressure, hormonal imbalances, diabetes, mental health issues, digestive problems, acid reflux...the list goes on and on.  Matthew Walker, a Sleep Scientist, is a leading world expert on the topic of sleep.  We highly recommend checking out any of his extensive videos, podcasts, and TED Talk lectures available on why sleep is important and why we need to focus on getting the best sleep possible.

Early intervention can reduce the risk of severe side effects of sleep disordered breathing.  Once the issues are severe, the treatments are severe, as well.  The golden standard treatment by the medical community for severe sleep disturbance is a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine to keep a flow of air going, thus preventing the airway from collapsing.  Catching the early signs of sleep related disturbances allows for a variety of treatment options to be used, such as myofunctional therapy and other holistic approaches.  The good news is, Myofunctional Therapy can help stop further damage of the airway, and subsequently correct compensations of muscles and fascial system.

Myofunctional therapists will help you implement some of these options into your day and night routines.  Examples of adjunct tools could include a nasal hygiene routine (i.e. Arm & Hammer or NailMed saline spray), Breathe Right Nasal Strips, nasal cones, BoomBoom nasal sticks, a consistent sleep hygiene routine (i.e. cold room temperature, sleep mask), and microspore paper tape for mouth taping.  Myofunctional Therapy can help correct and stop further damage of the airway!

Tongue-tie & Tethered Tissue is a Problem Now and Later

How soon should we treat?

A proactive approach is always better than doing nothing at all!  Tongue-tie, also knows as Tethered frenum or Tethered tissue, could lead to severe consequences if left untreated.

Tissues that are restricted in movement could lead our kiddos into many health related conditions like mouth breathing, long face syndrome, disruptive behavioral changes, picky eaters, ear infections, tonsillitis, crowded teeth, and dental decay.  Many of these conditions are very common, although not healthy, and could be overlooked as normal "kid issues."  We now know, in fact, it is not normal to have these issues! It's ok, we're here to help!

A tongue-tie (tethered tissue) that is never addressed as a child will typically become an inherited problem as an adult.  The adult side effect of non-treatment as a child could range from sleep apnea and sleep related issues to gut microbiome and autoimmune issues.  There is no escaping the health effects of a tongue-tie, if left untreated.  Some children and adults will benefit from surgical correction, others with less severe ties may benefit from myofunctional therapy alone.

Here at Myofunctional Wellness Group, we work on strengthening the muscles and giving your doctor the best outcome of any treatment suggested or needed.
